It requires 3 mercury batteries (NOT included) - The 1961 HP manual says it requires two Mallory Battery Co. TR233R (4V each), and one TR234 battery (5.33V) (HP stock 1420-0005 and 1420-0006). Dimensionally they are roughly C cell size.
